Once a person is diagnosed with lymphedema, it is common for the attending physician to suggest the use of compression garments that may come as sleeve or stocking. One of the most important things that you need to put in mind is that you should never use those sleeves that are too tight for you because they will restrict blood flow. It is recommended that you use the compression sleeve only when you are awake. But you have to make sure that you are taking it off if you are going to do something that involves water and getting the sleeves wet. You certainly don’t want to deal with any kind of skin irritation. If you will be doing some physical activities, you need to do them with the sleeves on because they contribute a lot. You also need to make sure that you moisturize your skin on a daily basis. The best time to do it is when you remove the sleeve at bed time so that come morning, the cream has already dried off.
You should get at least two sleeves so that you would be able to alternate its use. You should wash them every after use using lukewarm or cold water with some mild soap. These sleeves are usually replaced once every six months because they get stretched eventually. These sleeves come in different fabrics and colors so you will surely be able to choose the right one. You will also be able to get weights for these compression sleeves.
